Strong People... Weak Playgrounds

What would Miami look like if our surroundings were better designed to accommodate active healthy lifestyles? Stop for a moment and take a look around... our facilities for runners, bikers and other weekend warrior activities are less than average. I'll give credit to recent leadership that has paid a bit more attention to the growing need and made some much needed improvements but from my perspective I see a whole lot more potential and room to do more! This past Sunday, Alan Fertel, fellow Miami Dade Sports Commission Board member, wrote an interesting piece for The Miami Herald calling the current Miami the Sports Capital of the World. I have to mention that this idea to tag Miami as such actually came from Bill Talbert of the CVB at one of our quarterly MDSC Board Meetings even before the 3 Kings announced they would play in Miami.

Relax With a Runner on a Holiday

This past Sunday, while standing on the start line stage at the FIU campus with Javier Sanchez, the voice of US Road Sports & Entertainment, and listening tothe National Anthem it dawned on me how awesome it is to run a race on July 4th. I was fired up, I didn't want to lead on my bike I wanted to run! But work first run second, unless running is your work which it is but I can't run all the time. But here's my question... Why do we runners like to celebrate our holidays by running 5K's? I have my theories based on my observations throughout the years but an attempt at explaining the reason or reasons is probably going to lead to the obvious question: why does anyone run anyhow?

Less Wealth Greater Health

This past weekend I was witness to a great demonstration on how healthy Miami's exercise community really is despite the financial downturn. Communities throughout the country are seeing a record number of runners, cyclists, paddleboarders, triathletes, swimmers, boot campers... well you get the idea. Many argue that the reason for such a surge in exercise is because the economy is not doing so well and people have this need to burn and relieve their stress. Others argue that it is simply a financial response, therefore, people tend to turn to less expensive ways of enjoying themselves.

When You Need a Little Motivation.... Think Beer Run

So I am just going to say it! I have been slacking a bit on my running the past few weeks. I am pretty sure I got the case of the "mondays" when it comes to running. don't we all? It is a such a love/hate relationship, that at times I won't run. In this current adventure, I have realized its hard to make running "FUN" sometimes. The music gets old, running the same course or path, seeing the same things. It just gets flat out boring! Which brings me to the photo!

I was working on an email this week and was asked to find a image to replace the current one with. So that meant spending an hour digging in photos I have scanned over and over and over and over. Then I stumbled upon this great photo. I took this photo at the 2010 ING Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon and I have say this made me a bit excited about running again.

Hidden Joys

Taking down another week of training and work with a great deal of sweat as the Miami temps hover close to the high 90's... nice! I often tell the high school cross country runners I coach that when you run with your teammates through shear sweat from the hard and hot days of running one can reveal some of the neatest things. Exercising (even to an extreme at times) tends to show us some of the coolest and simplest things in life. Running with my 40 guys during a 10K tempo run this past weekend I showed them a running path I had recently discovered and that I think ranks as one of Miami's best.
